Elk Studios has a winner with Taco Brothers. Unlike a lot of other slot machines out there that are based on a predictable theme (do we need another space-themed slot machine?), Taco Brothers is refreshing because it tells a story. It's a very weird story, but it's a story nonetheless. Taco Brothers tells the tale of Paso, Pepe, and Pico, and their attempts to defeat Captain Diaz, the Taco-stealing long arm of the law.
The action in the base game takes place in the skies above a tiny Mexican town and it fills the entire screen with unique, cartoony symbols. In the main game there are plenty of wild symbols to keep you spinning the 243-ways-to-win reels. Free spins appear every 20-50 spins, which keeps the action going at a nice, consistent pace. Admittedly, you don't often win a lot more than 10-20x your wager, but they are so frequent that it's unlikely that you'll mind. Occasionally, out of nowhere, you'll get 40-60 times your bet and the free spins can potentially go on forever, providing that the brothers can avoid being caught by the evil captain. A golden bell is the wild symbol and it replaces all other symbols except the safe and Taco Brothers wild. Two Taco Brothers wilds gives you a free re-spin on the other reels, which gives you a second shot at collecting three safe symbols, which is the scatter symbol.
Three safe symbols anywhere on screen creates an explosion and destroys all other symbols except the safe, giving you a 1x, 2x, or 3x multiplier. You then go deep underground where Pico, a wild, drops down from reel 5 to the bottom of the screen and moves to the left by one on every spin. If he happens to get to reel one, he escapes, and the Pepe wild drops on reel five on the middle row, and again, moves to the left until he escapes. Lastly, Paso will do the same on reel 5. If Captain Diaz symbol appears on the screen, the brothers are locked up and the next brother attempts to escape. When the senorita appears, she frees any imprisoned brothers. The game ends if Captain Diaz captures the brothers, or they manage to escape, or some are captured and the rest escape.
As with all Elk games, you can choose to automatically play one of three betting strategies, or follow your own instincts. It's not the biggest hitting slot game out there, but it's well balanced, and offers the occasional thrills that come with a big win.
